Council of Deans of Nutrition and Dietetics welcomes new national Decadal Plan for the science of nutrition

The new ‘go-to’ guide for the future of nutrition science in Australia was released today. Leading dietitians and nutritionists across Australia worked with the Academy of Science to develop “Nourishing Australia: A Decadal Plan for the Science of Nutrition”.

The Decadal Plan shows how long-term health and well-being of Australians will be impacted by nutrition science research over the next decade. The environmental, social and economic benefits of doing nutrition science well are detailed.

Professor Danielle Gallegos, Chair of the Council of Deans of Nutrition and Dietetics said “The Decadal Plan outlines how equitable access to safe and nutritious food for all Australians is crucial for the health of the population; this Plan includes a commitment to improve the food and nutrition environments and the food and health literacy of Australians – young and old, so people can make food choices that support good health”.

One of the four pillars the Decadal Plan rests upon is ‘Education’. Professor Gallegos stated that “The goal for 2030 is to have an Academy of Nutrition which will bring together all nutritionists (from scientists to dietitians) and make it easier for the public to identify professionals who have undergone competency based education”.

The Council of Deans of Nutrition and Dietetics congratulates the National Academy of Science for leading development of the Decadal Plan for the Science of Nutrition - identifying the vast potential to boost the health and wealth of the nation.
